Poem of the Week! The Draper’s Assistant by Steven Gulvezan

THE DRAPER’S ASSISTANT

When is it okay?
When you’ve lost your dog,
your job, your car, your house,
your friends, your wife, your children,
your health, your mind, your dignity,
your Jesus hanging like a draper’s
assistant from a smashed window
in your derelict soul—

When is it okay to give up?

Steven Gulvezan was born in Detroit and has spent his career as a library director and a journalist.  His fiction and poetry have appeared in over twenty different literary publications.  He is an avid tennis fan, a prolific reader, a member of the Mystery Writers of America and a film aficionado.  He resides in Michigan with his wife, Karen and his dog, Yogi.

    I really like this one.

  2. Mark James Andrews says:

Per usual, SG is direct & plain spoken but with the sort of poetic authority earned by sustained contemplation……

  3. I assure you all, having lost all of those things, excpet children, it is never okay to give up. I can’t imagine a worse turn in life, and yet, I press on. Why? I honestly think it is out of an ultimate sense of boredom that I keep going. Hmph.

  4. Amanda Deo says:

Interesting thought, Murray. I think you may be on to something there. So many of us never quite know when it’s time..maybe because we subconsciously know that we can’t.
